The Universal Language of Design
Graphic Design is a globally recognised discipline that has the power to unite and connect people in the most unexpected ways. Think of any airport, train station or busy city. Every street sign, Wayfinder or advertising poster you will encounter was once in the mind of a designer. And while each differs in the details, they all share the same fundamental principle. Human communication!
The universal language of Graphic Design brought Taiwo Eletu from her home country of Nigeria to the British Academy of Graphic Design. It all began with the support of two brothers who saw her creative light. Back in Nigeria, her brothers were both working in a printing company and encouraged her to explore her creative leanings. When family sees the designer inside you, creativity clearly lives in the genes of a person.
“At first, I was simply curious, but once I started learning and working in graphic design, I realised it was something I genuinely loved. Since then, I've continued developing my skills, and today branding and identity design inspires me the most because it combines creativity with problem-solving.”
Before enrolling in the academy Taiwo was already an experienced graphic designer. With a creative childhood behind her and an undeniable urge to do something artistic, she found graphic design was an ideal outlet.
“I had also studied graphic design previously, but I wanted to deepen my knowledge of branding, digital design and industry-standard software.
I enrolled at the Academy to build on my existing experience, gain a recognised qualification and develop the skills needed to pursue a professional career in graphic design. My goal was to strengthen my portfolio and confidently transition into a career doing what I enjoy most—creating meaningful visual designs.”

All life is Inspiration
Graphic Design is a visual medium and the strongest, most impactful designs will surpass any language barrier or cultural discrepancies. It touches upon emotions and feelings, and the globally shared human condition.
“Before enrolling at the British Academy of Graphic Design, I had recently moved to the UK and was working in a warehouse. I initially joined as a Warehouse Operative and later progressed to supporting a Team Manager, which helped me develop my organisational, communication and teamwork skills.”
And these skills are indeed transferable. Taiwo may have a background in graphic design but many students at the academy come from completely different industries. The true beauty of learning is that everything we do in our lives will contribute in some way to the current path we walk. This is even more true for a creative career. Inspiration is the bedrock of design and what is more inspiring than a varied life of experiences and knowledge.
“I've learned that I'm capable of achieving more than I first believed. I deliberately chose to complete every assignment in Adobe Illustrator, even though I was much more experienced with CorelDRAW. It wasn't always easy, but I stayed committed, practised regularly and used tutorials whenever I needed help.
I also discovered the importance of discipline and planning. I completed my assignments much earlier than expected so I could spend more time with my newborn, which showed me what determination can achieve.”
Design for the Life you Want
Personal and family life is often an everyday part of the responsibilities of many students. Life does not stand still just because you want to pursue your dreams and, in many ways, there is no right time to start. But rather than feeling discouraged, this is in fact liberating. If there is no right time, then there is no wrong time. It’s all about just deciding to take the leap. The Academy offers options that can fit in with a busy life as well as total flexibility coupled with accreditation. This was the very thing that Taiwo was looking for.
“I needed a flexible course that would fit around full-time work. After finding that a local college wasn't the right option, I searched online and discovered the British Academy of Graphic Design. The flexibility of learning at my own pace immediately stood out.
Looking back, it was the right decision. Each assignment builds on the previous one, helping me improve my technical skills, creativity and confidence while developing a professional portfolio.”
As Taiwo approaches the end of her course, she is finding her graphic design voice and spreading her wings. Personal growth will always accompany learning, but this rarely happens without first testing yourself.
“Learning Adobe Illustrator while completing assignments was my biggest challenge. I already knew how to achieve many design ideas in CorelDRAW, but I wanted to master the software most employers expect designers to know.”

Creative Dreams
But nothing worth doing comes easy and now Taiwo is building a strong portfolio of a variety of design work.
“The most rewarding part has been seeing my confidence and skills develop with every assignment. Looking back at my earlier work compared with my later projects, I can clearly see how much I have grown.
The project I am most proud of is Born Green, where I created a complete brand identity for a children's clothing company. Designing the logo, packaging and brand identity guide from scratch confirmed that branding and identity design is the area I would most like to specialise in.”
Taiwo is paving the way to her creative future in design. Her ambitions involve combining graphic design with print and eventually running her own business in branding, packaging and advertising. As she builds on her skills and experience, Taiwo’s personal growth naturally follows, and what a winning combination that is!
“When I first joined the Academy, my goal was simply to improve my graphic design skills. Looking back now, I've gained far more than that. I've developed confidence, learned industry-standard software, discovered the area of design I'm most passionate about and built a portfolio that I'm genuinely proud of. This course has strengthened my belief that graphic design is where I belong, and I'm excited to continue learning, growing and building a career in an industry that I truly enjoy.”
